DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT

What are the tests?

There are various tests that greatly assist in the diagnosis and management of epilepsy. The most common are the EEG and MRI.

How is epilepsy diagnosed?

Epilepsy is not one condition. There are numerous epilepsy syndromes that are characterised by seizure type, EEG pattern, causes, age of onset, the existence of developmental delay and prognosis.

How is epilepsy treated?

Treatment is usually with Antiepileptic Drugs also referred to as AEDs. Many epilepsy syndromes respond well to a specific drug or to a combination of drugs.

Surgery

In recent years surgery has become a well-recognised treatment for some types of epilepsy, however, for most people with epilepsy brain surgery or other surgery is not an option.
