Trivia Challenge is an exciting, engaging classroom activity for school students across Australia. Students in Years 3 to 10 in Victoria and Tasmania are invited to participate in Trivia Challenge. At each year level, and in teams of four, students answer 100 VELS-aligned general knowledge questions in 45 minutes, engaging in much discussion in the process.
Trivia Challenge aims to increase students' understanding of epilepsy. Along with all question materials, written and digital information about epilepsy is provided to help students answer the few epilepsy questions included in each quiz.
Teachers welcome the easily-implemented activity and report improvements in children’s self-confidence, social interaction and enthusiasm for the curriculum. Schools and students are encouraged to fundraise for the Epilepsy Foundation of Victoria or the Epilepsy Association of Tasmania, while at the same time building community awareness of epilepsy.
Since its inception in 1992, Trivia Challenge has grown steadily and, to date, over more than 200,000 students have participated.
Primary Schools
Primary School Timeline / Registration Form
Each year, students raise funds for epilepsy through school events or sponsorship, and then complete the written quiz at school in teams of three or four.
- The quiz takes approximately 45 minutes and comprises 100 questions. Trivia Challenge aligns with the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) core interrelated strands of Physical, Personal and Social Learning, Discipline-based Learning and Interdisciplinary Learning through challenging questions based around Health and Physical Education, Civics and Citizenship, The Arts, English, The Humanities, Mathematics, Science and Technology
- Students are encouraged to learn about epilepsy by reading a brochure designed for young people and by watching a video "Epilepsy. Yes you can help".
- Teachers are asked to run the quiz on a day that suits them within the month of May. After the event, the money raised individually by the children is sent to the Epilepsy Foundation in the form of a cheque.

Fundraising
Trivia Challenge is a vital part of our awareness and fundraising program. The demand for our help by people affected by epilepsy stretches our resources almost beyond our means every year. Schools are able to select a fundraising method that suits them. While sponsorship forms are included in the pack sent to schools, other methods include whole school free dress days, fun runs, fantasy days, etc.
Primary Schools Finals
The winning teams from Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 represent their school in the Online Semi-Final which is conducted over the Internet during July and comprises a 100 question quiz that is to be completed within a 50 minute period.
The top scoring teams go on to represent their school in the Trivia Challenge Final which is held each year at Monash University Clayton Campus on a Sunday in October.
Registration starts at 9.30AM and the day finishes at approximately 1.30PM. Insted of a paper based quiz, the questions are projected onto a screen and the teams answer using a handheld electronic device which is similar to a mobile phone. This is very exciting for the students and the electronic scoring ensures accurate results.
What recognition do Primary schools and students receive?
The top teams from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 win for their schools the right to hold the championship perpetual trophy for one year and each winning team member will receive a replica trophy to keep. Each participating school is formally recognised with a certificate from the Foundation.
Apart from an increased understanding of epilepsy and the enhancement of existing school programs, each student will receive Trivia Challenge stickers and a certificate of appreciation. The members of every winning school team will receive an award certificate, with every grand finalist receiving a special medallion.
The winning Year 6 team will be invited to represent their state in the online National Grand Final.
