Professionals and Workplaces
The Epilepsy Foundation of Victoria provides epilepsy education and training workshops to a broad range of professionals, including:
· Disability and community care support workers, supervisors and assessors
· Nurses
· Aged Care workers
· Workplaces
· Government, such as Centrelink Job Capacity Assessors
· Employment Services, such as DESs
· School teachers, teacher aids, special development schools, Kindergartens, Creche
Our workshops have been designed after extensive consultation with organisations and people living with epilepsy and are based on current research. We always emphasis a person centred approach to supporting an individual living with epilepsy.
Participant feedback consistently rates our workshops as highly relevant, practical and engaging.
We work closely with organisations prior to booking workshops to ensure that the learning outcomes match the needs of the organisation. If an existing workshop requires adjusting, we can readily customise our workshops.
The Epilepsy Foundation’s facilitators come from varied professional backgrounds including teaching, nursing, welfare and social work, case management and disability sector programs. All facilitators hold a minimum Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment and continually invest in professional development to ensure our workshops and presentations are based on current research and targeted to adult learners.

Understanding and Managing Epilepsy for Disability Support Workers (3.5hrs) pdf

Learn strategies to help you better understand and support the individual living with a disability and epilepsy using a person-centred approach.
This workshop is designed for disability support staff in residential/respite, day or recreation settings, community care staff (such as HACC workers or assessors) and special development school teachers or aides.

• The workshop has been designed in consultation with people with a disability, carers, service providers, support workers and neurologists. Participants overwhelmingly rate this workshop as highly relevant, practical and comprehensive
• Support workers are actively involved in the workshop through case study exercises, DVDs and a comprehensive workbook
• A person-centred approach emphasises the importance of involving the person and their circle of support |

This workshop is targeted to HACC support workers and is essentially the same U&M Epilepsy for Disability Support Workers, with less emphasis on clients with intellectual disability.

· ‘Epilepsy in the Workplace: Understanding is the Difference” – short documentary showing five employees and their bosses/colleagues talking about strategies they use to maintain employment
· The facts about epilepsy
· What is epilepsy – what is a seizure
· The truths about epilepsy
· First Aid
· How can you support your fellow worker in the workplace?

NEW FOR 2012!
This training is targeted to all school staff such as teachers, integration aides and support staff.
The first part of the workshop we focus on what is epilepsy, the possible impact on students with epilepsy and how to support the student should a seizure occur at school. In the second half we focus more on the learning implications, development of Epilepsy Management Plans, and strategies to support students.
Unique value of session:
This training has been designed specifically for school settings. A simple, straightforward approach will increase staff confidence in supporting students.
Our new short documentary depicts three students, their parents and school staff discussing the impact of epilepsy. The session is highly relevant, practical and comprehensive.

Understanding and Managing Epilepsy for Special Development School teachers (1.5hr)
|
|
|
This presentation is designed to give an overview of epilepsy in the SDS environment and is typically prepared in consultation with the student and parent/guardian. Topics covered include :
· The facts about epilepsy
· What is epilepsy – what is a seizure
· Impact of epilepsy on the student
· Epilepsy and intellectual disability, including behaviour
· Epilepsy Management Plans
· First Aid
· How can you support the student with epilepsy?
· Q&A
This presentation is just one way we can help a school to better support a student with epilepsy. We also offer additional support uncluding help with Epilepsy Management Plans, Individual Learning Plans, counselling for students and family and epilepsy awareness presentations/talk to the students's peers.
SDS teachers and teacher aides who support numerous students with epilepsy are strongly encouraged to attend the Understanding and Managing Epilepsy for Disability Support Workers workshop. This workshop provides far greater detail and practical strategies to support students with a disability in an SDS environment.
