and carers, and for those professionals working with people with epilepsy. Run in conjunction with the 8th Asian & Oceanian Epilepsy Congress to be held in Melbourne from 21-24 October, 2010, the final program is now available.
This one-day symposium, which will be held on 21 October 2010, is for people with epilepsy, their carers, family and friends, and for those professionals working with people with epilepsy in the community, whether in the disability sector, education, employment, nursing, or the leisure sector. There is something of interest for everyone. International and national speakers, experts in their field, will lead the discussion groups throughout the day.
The day begins with leading sociologist Graham Scambler from University College of London, presenting the keynote address on epilepsy and stigma, Understanding 'shame' and 'blame' in social and clinical worlds, followed by popular Australian television sports presenter and commentator, past Australian Rugby League captain, and author, Wally Lewis, who will relate his own experience of epilepsy spanning some 20 years.
Discussion groups will examine a variety of epilepsy-related issues including sexuality; memory; sport and exercise; practical ways to manage depression; employment and advocacy issues; sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP); and epilepsy and creativity.
International speakers include Dr Elson So from the respected Mayo Clinic in the US, who will provide up-to-date information on SUDEP - who is at risk and how best to impart this information, and Olympic cyclist and six-times world champion, Marion Clignet, who will talk about how she became an elite athlete with her epilepsy in tow and the issues she faced along the way.
Concluding the day IBE President, Mike Glynn, will present the Outstanding Persons with Epilepsy Awards, followed the book launch - Social Epileptology, edited by Dr Jaya Pinikihana and Dr Christine Walker. Delegates are then invited to attend the Congress Opening Ceremony and Welcome Reception.
This will be an exciting and full day for delegates, as the day provides a forum to meet other people with epilepsy from across South -East Asia, Asia and the Pacific and share your points of view, as well as the opportunity to meet Marion Clignet and Wally Lewis.
For Victorians living with epilepsy, who have a Health Care Card, the conference fee can be reduced to $35 (Australian dollars) by registering for the Congress through the Epilepsy Foundation of Victoria.
